Definition: a right to benefits that is granted esp. by law or contract (as an insurance policy)
This word has been on my mind a lot lately. It all started when I was unfortunate enough to read some hatefilled tweets sent to my oldest son. It continued when I heard what Tiger Woods spoke to the press last Friday about his recent troubles. And more still when I was stupid enough to visit Gateworld.net. I went there innocently excited to read the story they wrote about an interview my friend Curt (Showpatrol) did with Brian last month. Why it took them so long to report on the interview is now obvious to me! Of course I scrolled down to the comments, thinking they would be something different than the nonsense usually found on that site. What I read was again, a group of people voicing their "opinion" about why Stargate Universe is not what they want.
I spoke with the owners of the Gateworld web site. I was encouraged to do so by a mutual friend of mine and theirs. While assuring me the majority of comments come from a minority of readers, they were unable to explain to me why they continued to allow this "minority" to continue to ruin what these two individuals have worked hard to build I will save that thought process for another time.
What I want to say, and remind all of us of is this. Entitlement is a nasty habit. When a person has this mentality, it will suck the life out of any creativity and drive once harbored in the soul. I see this everyday where I live, in the severely Welfare dependent state of Kentucky. There are generations of families that know nothing but how to work the system. Children are on disability right along with the parents and grand parents. Very few work for a living, and honestly, have no desire to do so. They can make more money and have better benefits by living off the federal government. What this entitlement mentality does to these people can be seen in the eyes, which I beliive are the windows to the soul. They have no life, no sparkle and no dreams.
I realize the state of mind about a TV show is very different than these families. But those that are moaning and complaining do not know the difference. They are no more entitled to the talent and creativity of SGU than the beneficiaries of welfare. Of course there are some that are on welfare for very good reasons. It's a leg up, if you will. Just like there are people that just don't like SGU and won't watch it.
Tiger Woods grew up with an amazing talent, obviously. His downfall began when he started to believe his talent entitled him to abuse the trust of his wife and the women he was having affairs with. He mentions entitlement when he spoke last week. He is aware the entitlement mentality eventually sucked the life and dreams out of hs soul. Hopefully, he will get the help he needs to regain his pride.
I know how hard Brian has worked. I know the struggles he overcame every day to survive in New York City monetarily. I know the fears he had and how hard he worked to overcome those fears. He never once, even for a moment, thought Juilliard owed him an education. Never did he say Broadway owes it to me to have me on it's stages. He knew in order to obtain his dream, he would have to work harder than he thought possible just to have the chance at an audition. These are just some of the reason's the reaction's of the minority has hurt and disappointed me.
The cast and crew of SGU all have similar stories. They are all at the top of their game. They are all amazingly talented, but more than that, they earned the opportunity to create. Not one of the people that spend a ridiculous amount of time complaining about what these people do, could ever step into their well earned shoes. The time they spend with the entitlement mentality is sucking the life out of them. Their misery is palable. Their pitiful attempts to explain and "argue" for their position does nothing but confirm the fact they are incabable of ever being successful. Sure, some probably have great jobs. Possibly even well paying jobs. But I am certain they could never act, write, produce or even sweep the floors for SGU.
It is time that we see these people for what they are. Seekers of entitlement. It is time that they be called upon to realize nobody owes them a thing. SGU does not owe them a "Stargate" show. The actors don't owe them to perform as these untrained suckers of dreams want them to perform. These people are NOT fans, I refuse to believe a fan would behave in this manner.
Whew, I feel better already!

I completely agree. Very well said Sherry!! GO SGU!! :)
ReplyDeleteI know that I mentioned this over on Twitter but maybe I can put my thoughts together better here than I can in 140 characters or less.
ReplyDeleteWhile I admit that I do not have anywhere near the popularity that your son has being the star of a television show on SyFy, myself and several other comic artist friends have run into this type of mentality by so-called "fans". There are certain people for various reasons that I will not go into that feel that they own a work of fiction (even though they are not the creators of said fiction) and feel that they are better to represent that work, be it movie, novel or comic/graphic novel and they will howl bloody murder should anything not go the way they feel it should go. Little to nothing can be done with people like this as what it comes down to is control issues on their part and they're not willing to let go. You hit the nail right on the head when you said that they are seekers of entitlement. These people could never come up with a story half as good as the one that they complain about, yet they feel that they are the prime person to voice all that is wrong with a work.
I take negative energy very hard. I get several email a week from long time readers and readers that have newly found my comic and plowed through the archives in two days and can't wait for new updates. I get positive words spoken about the characters or a plot moment that spoke to them, and yet one negative comment will punch me in the gut and stick with me for days.
It's very hard, but you must remember that the negative people are only a small percentage. People can not like something and chose to not watch or read but they won't spout hate. and then there are the fans that enjoy the work offered up for their enjoyment. Try to let them shine the brightest. =)
Just know that we love the show and feel that all those people making negative comments are probably whiners in their everyday life. I pity them.

Thnx 4 this. Makes me pissed when ppl abuse welfare system when families like mine actually need it but can't figure out the system. I like the anaglogy with SGU, seems perfect 2 me.
ReplyDeleteBravo girlfriend, you always say what needs to be said. The people who make these comments are sorely lacking something in their lives. I am so very proud of your ability to put into words what a lot of us have felt.
ReplyDeleteThank you Sherry for saying so well what many of us feel. I have the hardest time understanding how love can breed hate. Those that created what the haters love created SGU. It makes no sense. But there it is anyway. They feed upon each other and build up a sense of accomplishment between themselves. All the while they are the ones that have lost out. For we have a stargate...a new adventure...a creative team to create the magic of Stargate once again.
ReplyDeleteThey have blinded themselves to the gift. The gift they will always refuse. It will always be their loss. I love all three stargates and will always.
We are the lucky ones to see beyond what was lost...to see so much more that we have gained. Brian Jacob Smith is a bright star for Stargate. He is clearly letting us see the qualities of Lt. Scott that will endear him to us forever. It is a gift...for us all to enjoy. I say we enjoy it and let the "haters" be the unhappy ones.
Well said.
ReplyDeleteIf people don't like SGU than turn over and watch something else.
I love the show and like that it is different from SG1 & SGA.

Very well said!
ReplyDeleteWhat a nasty and rambling post! Nobody says that bashing SGU actors for the flaws of the show is ok. But SGU does suck, and frustration of the franchise fans is absolutely understandable. And your contempt towards the franchise fans reflects badly on you, not on them.
ReplyDeleteDear Anonymous,
ReplyDeleteYour behavior prooves my point. I didn't ask you to read my blog. And honestly, I don't care what you think. Just like you should not care what I think.
If you don't like ANY TV show, don't watch it. And searching out the mother of an actor, on a show you don't like, and posting hateful comments on her personal blog...Stop claiming you are a franchise fan. You and those like you give the real fan's a bad reputation.
For the last time, leave me alone.
I agree with your post and appreciate a fellow mama bear! When it comes to our children we will fight to the death! I never understood why my mom was that way until I had a "cub" of my own ;-)
ReplyDeleteAs for your son I follow him on twitter and he seems to be an extremely grounded and "normal" guy. JOB WELL DONE!!
Well said! I love SGU and the previous two series as well. All the people that are being negative really need to grow up. How immature to go out of their way to be so hateful! IMO, it's the best show out there right now. I really hope your son and his co-workers are not letting all these negative people get to them. =) They are going a great job! You obviously did a great job raising your sons. I have a 15 month old son and hope I do as well. ;)
ReplyDeleteI agree with a lot that has been said. I am a fan of all the stargate shows. I don't like the fact that the other shows were cancelled but that does not give a person the right to say negative things about someones work. The reason SGU was made the way it has been made was to try something different and I like it. I'm something of an actor myself and I know what constructive criticism is but the things that were said about the actors, writers, producers, and everyone else was just plain cruel. I truly appreciate the the people who worked on the show and I hope to see more.
ReplyDeleteBig fan of Brian by the way. Make sure that he knows that he's knows he's an incredible actor. Sorry for the anonymous post earlier. I didn't know how to sign in lol.
ReplyDeleteI posted my own blog about this. You should check it out if you'd like.
