This is a picture of me and my grandmother at Disneyland. I think I was about 16. My mamaw was my inspiration for having fun in life! Every year as soon as school was out, my brothers and I traveled to Pine Knot Kentucky for the summer. My mom's mom and dad (my mamaw and dad) and her sister (my Aunt Barb) and my cousins (Jimmy, Todd and Daniel) all lived there. My grandparents house was up the hill from Barb's. We had nothing but fun! My grandpa bought me a pony most every year. If he didn't get one, then my brothers were saddled up for me to ride! My grandma made homemade biscuits, OMG, I can still smell them! My mamaw loved to laugh. She laughed from morning until night. She thought we were funny, she thought everything was funny! We picked blackberries, each of us had our own buckets. She would make each of us our own cobbler, never had to share! That was a big deal for me with a family full of boys!!!! Awww the memories. My mamaw and dad died 5 years ago, they were in an automobile accident. I miss them, but I know for sure they are happy to be with my mom and she is happy to have them.
I want to be that kind of grandma, full of joy and laughter.
You will be gf. Love hearing stories of the wonderful memories of life.
ReplyDeleteI have so few memories of my grandmother. It is always nice to have a place to record them. Pictures make the memories so much more memorable. Thank you for sharing with us.
ReplyDeleteSounds like your Mamaw had the same spirit as my Grandmaman Zizi has.
ReplyDeleteZizi worships Queen Elizabeth, but is a big fan of Def Leppard and Queen. :)
I'm sorry you lost them all so soon.

What a great story Sherry!! I lost Granna (my dad's mom) when I was three from cervical cancer and I will be attempting to make her Candy Cane Rolls this year for Christmas. Her handwritten recipe is the only thing of her's I have. My dad'd dad died shortly after my first birthday from alcohol poisoning and he and my dad didn't get along so I never even got to meet him. I cherish all the momories I have with my family and friends because I know how quickly you can lose them. Granna was a woman to look up to from what my family tells me. She always put her children first and was a very strong woman. I know she lived life to the fullest and that is what I've tried to accomplish in my life. I miss her but I know she's looking down upon me.
ReplyDeleteOh GateMom, I love hearing the stories about your family. I remember having good times with my maternal grandmother at Disney World: she rode the rides with us, even the roller coasters! She's still with us, but is starting to forget things (though at 84, you can't blame her!).

I LOVE your stories! And I have no doubts that you're well on your way to being just that kind of grandparent! :)
ReplyDeleteHearing you talk about your Mamaw brings back fond memories of my family's dear friends in Kentucky. They referred to their grandma as Mamaw too. And grandpa was Papaw. I love how close southern families are. Wish more people had such wonderful family memories.
ReplyDeleteAll four of my grandparents either died before I was born or when I was very young, so I never experienced having grandparents. I really enjoy reading about other people's relationships with their grandparents. It gives me an insight into how it could have been.
